What to Know About the New 2023 Mercedes-AMG GLC

Mercedes-Benz launched a new generation of the popular GLC SUV earlier this year, which means that more powerful AMG versions will be coming shortly. Indeed, the AMG division has now officially revealed both the 2023 GLC 43 and GLC 63 S versions. Here is a closer look at them.

The GLC 43 AMG

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC is powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that features an electric exhaust gas turbocharger, a technology taken directly from the company’s F1 race cars. This system places a small electric motor inside the turbocharger in order to provide an almost instantaneous response by spooling up the compressor before exhaust gasses can do so, as in a regular turbocharger. Running on the 48-volt mild-hybrid system, this electric turbocharged provides an output of 421 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. Combined with a 9-speed multi-clutch transmission and the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, this gives the GLC 43 AMG the ability to accelerate up to 100 km/h in only 4.8 seconds.

The GLC 63 S E Performance AMG

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E Performance version is the most powerful and most dynamic version of the new SUV. This model uses the same 2.0L turbocharged engine as the GLC 43, but it benefits from a number of modifications that allow it to produce 680 horsepower and 1,020 Nm of torque when combined with the high-voltage hybrid system. For instance, the electric turbocharger runs on the same 400-volt system as the electric motor mounted on the rear axle, which also helps improve performance by providing additional power and close control of each wheel’s traction level at all times. Using the same multi-clutch transmission as the GLC 43, the GLC 63 S E Performance is capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds before reaching an electronically limited top speed of 275 km/h.

What both models have in common

More than just appearance changes and more powerful engines, the AMG versions of the new 2023 Mercedes GLC benefit from many unique features that improve handling and performance, such as the AMG Dynamic Select system. This technology allows the driver to choose how the vehicle drives by tailoring the settings of the powertrain, suspension, and steering systems in order to provide a relaxed, comfortable ride on city streets and highways, as well as dynamic handling and impressive performance when the driver wants to have more fun. While Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes are provided to alter the behavior of the AMG Ride Control adaptive suspension, this technology also consistently monitors the road surface and the driving style in order to prevent harsh responses on sudden potholes while in Sport mode or uncontrolled body movements during sudden turns in Comfort mode. The adaptive steering system also benefits from a steerable rear axle that works to help maneuverability at low speeds and stability at higher speeds by virtually shortening or lengthening the wheelbase.
